PRECIS OF THE MINUTES OF THE PCC MEETING HELD ON WEDNESDAY 20TH FEBRUARY 2008

Items discussed included the following:

Matters Arising from Previous Meeting An amendment made to item 4 of the Bereavement Visiting “Good Practise Document”.

Main Agenda

1. PCC Away Day Arrangements were discussed and the proposed agenda outlined.

2. Christians Against Poverty Revd Gilkes outlined the three levels of engagement possible with CAP and it was decided to initially engage with level 1. Volunteers from the congregation would be sought to attend the training course.

3. Finance We have received a bequest of £80,000 from the estate of the late Jean Wagstaff.

4. Wardens Items It was decided not to renew the Gasforce contract but engage Chris Kerfoot to undertake the servicing over the next year. The Parish Weekend charges were discussed. Barbara is dealing with the Faculty for the Goldsmiths exhibition.

5 Mission Roger has revamped the church website in relation to our Mission giving.

6. Children’s Work No report received.

7. Churches Together Due to problems with communication, we were unable to send a representative to the previous meeting which was to discuss Human Embryo and Stem-Cell Legislation.

8 Deanery The Chevet and Wakefield Deaneries officially merged on 1st February 2008. At the meeting at St Peter’s Stanley, Revd Joyce Jones spoke about the Transforming Lives initiative. There was also discussion about having more open air summer services and extending the Street Angels scheme.

Any other business The next meeting scheduled for 19th March 2008 during Holy Week will be brought forward to 12th March 2008.

Matters Arising from Previous Meeting

The new church boiler has been fitted and we are still applying for further grants to help with the cost.

Main Agenda

1. Interim review of change of service pattern
It was decided to revert back to one 10.30 am service every Sunday with a 6.30 pm communion service on the first Sunday of the month and a social event at 6.30 pm on the third Sunday. The children will have worship at their groups on the baptism Sunday.

2. PCC Away Day
The date for this will be February 23rd at Bishop’s Lodge Chapel. The aim of the day will be to collate the answers to the Hope 08 questionnaires.

3. Mini Bus policy revision
The mini bus policy was revised.

4. Bereavement Visiting
Don and Shirley have put together guidelines for bereavement visiting and these were explained to the PCC.

5 APM Date
The date was set for Wednesday 16th April 2008.

6. Vicar’s Items
There has been a good response to the Hope 08 questionnaires. Don explained the upcoming Climate Change event.

7. Wardens
Roger and Ron are doing a lot of small repairs at the moment. The tidying up after Christmas had revealed that work needed doing to the chairs and the carpet in church. The wardens are to see if Chrissie needs any extra help with the cleaning following the church school nativity performances. The millennium sign is to be removed from the front of the church.

8 Children’s Work
Gavin has met with the worship team about the children’s worship.

9. Churches Together
The prayer for Christian Unity service is at St Mary Magdalene’s, Altofts on Wednesday 23rd January at 7.30 pm. Churches Together have organised a discussion with Ed Balls about human embryos, the date to be confirmed.

Any other business
Don explained about the Mara display on 3rd February.

Items discussed included the following:

Matters Arising from Previous Meeting The installation of the new boiler will start on 26th November 2007. The sub committee met and approved the re-marriage of the divorced couple. The debris has been cleared from the church gutter. The DAC met and discussed the stonework faculty.

Main Agenda

1. Preparation of couple to marry after Divorce The PCC agreed for Don to run an in-house course for this couple.

2. Hope 08 Questionnaires are to be compiled for the church family to give to their family and friends. The PCC will have an away day on 23rd February to collate all the information.

3. Finance

The PCC were shown spreadsheets showing incoming and outgoing resources for every year since 1999. A spreadsheet was produced showing projected incoming and outgoing for this year. It was decided that any spending above £200 had to be approved by the PCC. A budget will be set for 2008 and everyone must stick to it. Taking into account the projection timesheet it looks as though the overspend for this year may be much less than previously expected. Dave Clark has not been employed by the church since August. The Parish Share has been paid in full.

The youth worker paid £5,500.50 into the church account to cover admin and management time for 2006/2007 and 2007/2008. £3000 restricted money for 2012-4-2012 has not been spent and is still in the account.

5. Warden’s Items
  • 1) The guttering has been cleaned.
  • 2) The keypad lock on the church has had to be replaced.
  • 3) We have been given 12 lockers from New College, they are in the newly cleared out back room in the parish rooms.
  • 4) We are waiting for a quote re the vandalism; this will be covered by the insurance.
  • 5) Jonathan is to look again at the possibility of mosquito sirens.


6. Co-ordinators The co-ordinators met and discussed the services that are leading towards reconciliation.

7. Mission A list of the charities that we give our tithe to will be distributed with the minutes and will be discussed at the January meeting. The PCC decided to give £250 to the Bangladesh Cyclone Appeal.

8 Children’s Work Don reported that the Youth Mission Week had ups and downs, Gavin will review what to do next year.

9. Churches Together The new Baptist minister and the new vicar at St Mary’s, Altofts are now in place.

10 Deanery The next open meeting is at St Peter’s Stanley on Thursday 31st January

11. Deanery The Deanery have not met.

12. 2012-4-2012 The PCC decided to spend the restricted £3000 during Hope 08 as it is part of 2012.

Items discussed included the following:

  • Matters Arising from Previous Meeting
  • The Bishop’s email re his meeting with the PCC.
  • Letters to the flood victims.
  • Concerns about some comments made by PCC members at the last meeting.
  • Details from Goldsmiths re the exhibition next summer.
  • Scott has not looked at the Big Ask material yet.
  • Dave Clark has been appointed as the new school governor.
  • A welcome letter will be sent to the new vicar at Altofts.


Main Agenda

1. Replacing Church Boiler The PCC decided to go with the quote from Byfield Heating.

2. Christmas Services The Carol Service will be held on Sunday 16th December. The Christingle Services will be at 3.00 and 5.00 pm on Christmas Eve. Midnight Communion at 11.30 pm on Christmas Eve. BCP Communion at 8.00 am and Family Communion at 10.30 am on Christmas Day. The Christingles will be made on Saturday 22nd December.

3. Child Protection Officer Lynsey Walker was appointed as Child Protection Officer.

4.Finance The expenditure for August was £16,945 and the income was £9,273 giving an overspend of £7,672 bringing us to a total overspend of £25,261. The PCC discussed this and a breakdown of all the income and expenditure will be presented at the next meeting.

5. Vicar’s Items A sub-committee was appointed to meet with the couple requiring re-marriage in church. Don will look for an Alpha course to send another couple to.

6. Wardens
  • 1) Barbara contacted Harrisons to look at the blocked gutter above the glass roof.
  • 2) Our faculty for the stonework will be discussed at the DAC meeting on 9th November.


7. Co-ordinators The co-ordinators have met for prayer.

8 Mission Roger explained about Hope 08 and all the ideas for the year.

9. Children’s Work The Mission Week was discussed.

10 Churches Together Don has met with the new Baptist minister (Edith Dawson).

11. Deanery The Deanery have not met.

Recycling—The bins for paper and plastics are in place in the church and parish rooms’ kitchens.

  1. 1. Rental of Parish Rooms
Private Hire—It was decided to keep the cost of hire at the same price. Pre-school Rental—It was decided to put the hourly rate up by 50p.

  1. 2. Room to Grow Worship Equipment
The PCC discussed the equipment that would be needed for the young peoples worship on a Sunday morning.

  1. 3. Review of Co-ordinators Stipend
This item is deferred until the next meeting.

  1. 4. Environmental Issues
This item will be discussed at the next meeting when Scott will bring details about thermal energy/solar panels.

  1. 5 Finance
Up to the end of May we have had an income of £66,777 and an expenditure of £78,739 so we have overspent by £6,962.

  1. 6. Vicar’s Items


It was decided to not hold an evening service on Sunday 29th July and to start the new service times on Sunday 16th September.
Re-marriage of a divorced couple in church was discussed.

  1. 7. Warden’s Items
  1. 1) The faculty has been returned as it is incorrectly filled in.
  2. 2) We are still waiting for a quoted from Vale Casement Windows.
  3. 3) A new radio mic has been bought and Jonathan is going to turn the
  4. lecturn mic into a wireless radio mic.
  5. 4) Jonathan is trying to get a demonstration of the Mosquito Youth Deterrent.
  6. 5) Twelve new spotlights are to be fitted in the parish rooms.
  7. 6) Jonathan has purchased the new no smoking signs.

We have received an update from the Brassingtons. The first Sunday event will be an African evening with the Fannons.

  1. 11. Churches Together
Churches Together will be holding a meeting before they host a Fairtrade stall at the Gala in September. There will be a volunteers exhibition at the council offices on Tuesday 26th June, we will have an outside stall and a display inside.

  1. 12. Deanery
The deanery have not met. There is an open evening at St Catherine’s on 16th September.

  1. 13. 2012-4-2012
This item is tied up in the rest of the agenda.

At this point Don showed the PCC a DVD about Christians Against Poverty.
